A pleasant snack.

One of the things that I started doing once the kids took off to college was sending them off with "care packages".

It continues as 2 remain in college and 2 more are starting their own homes.

A $1 plastic shoebox with some holes drilled provides a bit of "home". Black Seeded Simpson loose leaf lettuce ...

Strawberries in a hanging basket.

Some things that I am trying to add for them this year are cukes in hanging baskets and Tumbling Tom tomatoes. It'll work. Got to keep those kids close to their roots ;)

Shoot, even trying some Little Finger carrots in a shoebox.

It is a lifestyle that I want them to retain ... and they love it.

2012 - Another year begins

I got slack last year as the heat and drought consumed so much of my time. It was a tough year. A good year but tough.

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes of producing food.

As of today, there are some 3,000 onions started.

Some 500 tomato plants started.

Hundreds of peppers, cabbage, celery, lettuce ... It really is a busy time.

Plus the potting up of maters and such.

And the Winter cover crops continue. Winter wheat and Austrian Winter Peas are really starting to take off.

Lots of green manure to till in. Beds to be reclaimed.

Seeds to be shelled ... there is plenty to do.

Picked our first squash casserole 5-28-11

What a difference 4 days make. The season has landed and things just seem to come together.

There lies some mighty fine chomping coming along.

And the season begins???

It seems, to me, that the seasons have grown stranger each year these past few. Cold, storms, rain, drought, hail and heat ... sometimes in the same week.

Yet, somehow, progress is made as time passes us by. For all the delays and failures, it just seems to fall into place.

And here come the squash.

Finally! Some ( more) planting!

We saw 43, 44 and 46 degrees for lows last week ... following the .8 inch of rain we got Friday evening.

But, finally, the ground got dry enough for planting, we took advantage of it and the season is underway.

Progress

It has been a cool, wet Spring here in NE GA. 46 degrees this morning and yet another shower.

Friday, we had a strong storm come through. The wind got under the fabric and made a mess of things.

Saturday was spent recovering ...

and the battle continues.
